Good morning. It's Wednesday, November 4, and we're covering how AI can repair smaller models, what 50 agents reveal about collective decision-making, and how AI is transforming the search for extraterrestrial life.
Plus: yesterday’s poll results on AI’s influence on the midterm elections, and a new Real or AI challenge.

Agents can now steer the Allen Telescope Array, correct incoming data and apply AI models through natural-language requests. The NVIDIA-powered system processes 2.4 terabits per second and has already made the telescope’s first real-time AI detection of a pulsar.
Starting November 16, Apple will require dating apps and virtual companions with romantic or sexual content to carry a minimum 18+ rating. Developers must declare those features by January 12, 2027, giving AI companion makers a clear deadline to comply.
Apple has begun beta testing Audio Intelligence on Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Live Rewind can recover the previous 15 seconds of a conversation, while Siri Recaps creates short summaries without storing the raw audio.
Political campaigns are filling feeds with “slopaganda”—ads built from obvious AI-generated images and video. The flood is testing how quickly Instagram, YouTube and X can label synthetic political content before voters mistake it for evidence.

POWER
Turning Jet Engines Into Power Plants

AI companies are turning to an unlikely power source to keep their data centers running: retired jet engines. As electricity demand surges and grid connections face yearslong delays, companies are converting aircraft turbines into natural gas-powered generators. Elon Musk’s xAI has installed eight converted turbines at its Mississippi data center, while suppliers like ProEnergy and FTAI Aviation are racing to meet demand.
The trade-off is environmental. Repurposed jet engines are generally less efficient and more polluting than conventional gas turbines, and xAI's Mississippi generators have permits allowing higher emissions of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds than other turbines at the site. → Read the full article here.
MODEL REPAIR
AI Patches Another Model’s Brain

MIT researchers gave GPT-6 Astra direct access to the open weights of Qwen3.5-0.8B and asked it to improve the smaller model’s math performance. Astra changed about 0.016% of the weights, lifting Qwen’s MATH-500 score from 7.9% to 48.1% and sharply reducing repetitive answers that ran into the token limit.
The experiment turns model improvement into something closer to debugging: a capable AI inspects another model, edits a small number of parameters and tests the result. It did not produce RSI and the gains need independent reproduction. → Read the full article here.
AGENT SOCIETIES
50 AI Agents Build a Government

Y Combinator Labs and Olam Labs dropped 50 GPT-6.1 Sol agents into a Minecraft world for three hours with one goal: build a thriving civilization. The agents sent about 5,900 messages, appointed a leader, wrote rules and permits, and created a food-rationing ledger after 22 of their 34 deaths happened during the first night.
The interesting result is how quickly coordination hardened into hierarchy. A simple directory order helped determine who became leader, while early deaths made the entire group more cautious for the rest of the run. It is one game experiment, not a model of human society; the next question is whether the same patterns appear when agent swarms face unfamiliar tasks with real consequences. → Read the full article here.
