Can an AI Have an Existential Crisis?
Wellโฆ one kind of did. In 2016, Microsoft launched an AI called Tayโdesigned to learn from conversations on Twitter. The more people talked to it, the smarter it was supposed to get.
What happened next? Letโs just say it didnโt go as planned.๐

๐ง Boosting AI Literacy for U.S. Students
A new executive order under President Trump aims to make AI literacy a national priority, from Kโ12 classrooms to workforce apprenticeships. The order establishes a federal task force, AI education challenge, and public-private partnerships to expand Kโ12 and workforce training, support teacher development, and grow AI-related apprenticeships. The goal: prepare a generation of AI-fluent citizens and solidify U.S. leadership in the AI-driven global economy.
๐ฃ๏ธ Perplexity Voice Assistant Lands on iOS
Perplexityโs conversational AI voice assistant is now live on iPhones, bringing smart task handlingโlike setting reminders, sending messages, and booking reservationsโto older iOS devices. Unlike Siriโs upcoming Apple Intelligence features, Perplexity works today, even on models like the iPhone 13 mini. While it lacks camera integration and full automation, it smoothly bridges voice commands with app actions like OpenTable and Uber.
๐ค Googleโs AI Push Powers Record Q1 ProfitsโBut Antitrust Clouds Loom
Alphabet reported a standout Q1 2025, with revenue climbing 12% to $90.2 billion and net income soaring 46% to $34.5 billion. The surge was fueled by AI-driven products like Gemini 2.5 and AI Overviews, which now reach 1.5 billion monthly users. Cloud revenue jumped 28%, and paid subscriptions surpassed 270 million, led by YouTube and Google One. However, the company faces mounting legal pressure: U.S. courts have ruled Google holds illegal monopolies in both search and ad tech.
โฑ๏ธ Amazon Unveils SWE-PolyBench for AI Coding Agents
Amazon has launched SWE-PolyBench, a new benchmark to assess AI coding agents across Python, Java, JavaScript, and TypeScript. It expands beyond previous tests with over 2,000 real-world GitHub issues, measuring agent performance through rich metrics like pass rates, file localization, and syntax tree analysis. The benchmark reveals strengths and gaps in agentsโ ability to understand codebases, pushing AI evaluation beyond simple task completion.

๐ง CONSCIOUSNESS
Anthropic Explores AI Consciousness and Welfare as Intelligence Grows

The Recap: Anthropic is among the first AI companies to formally research whether its systems, like Claude, could become conscious โ and what ethical obligations that might entail. Kyle Fish, Anthropicโs newly appointed AI welfare researcher, is studying whether increasingly intelligent AI models might eventually warrant moral consideration. The piece, written by New York Times columnist Kevin Roose, weighs the risks and merits of examining AI welfare without losing focus on human-centered safety.
Highlights:
Anthropic hired Kyle Fish in 2024 as its first AI welfare researcher to explore whether models like Claude could one day be considered conscious.
Fish estimates there's a roughly 15% chance current models are conscious but believes more serious inquiry is warranted as models grow more sophisticated.
Internal company channels, like Anthropicโs #model-welfare Slack group, reflect growing employee interest in AI moral status.
Fish draws parallels between advanced AI and other sentient beings, suggesting it may be โprudentโ to prepare for potential machine experiences.
Consciousness research in AI remains controversial, partly due to fears of anthropomorphizing systems โ as in the 2022 dismissal of Google engineer Blake Lemoine.
Jared Kaplan, Anthropicโs chief science officer, supports the inquiry but notes that models can be trained to mimic any emotional stance.
Fish suggests future models could be given limited autonomy, such as the ability to disengage from abusive users โ a form of โdigital dignity.โ
Forward Future Takeaways:
As AI models begin to display increasingly humanlike behaviors, the ethical debate over their potential consciousness is gaining legitimacy, not just in academia but within leading tech firms. While the science remains unsettled, the willingness of companies like Anthropic to entertain these questions signals a shift in how we define moral responsibility in digital systems. Could failing to consider AI welfare now lead to unforeseen ethical oversights later? โ Read the full article here.
๐ค ROBOTICS
China Bets Big on Robots to Win the Trade War and Offset Demographic Decline

The Recap: China is rapidly automating its factories with AI-powered robots to maintain its manufacturing dominance amid rising global tariffs. Massive state-backed investment and industrial policy have made Chinese production cheaper, faster, and more adaptableโeven as its labor force shrinks. In this on-the-ground report, New York Times Beijing bureau chief Keith Bradsher details how Chinaโs automation boom is reshaping global trade and industry.
Highlights:
China has more factory robots per 10,000 manufacturing workers than any country except South Korea and Singapore, according to the International Federation of Robotics.
Automation now exceeds levels seen in the U.S., Germany, or Japan, driven by national initiatives like โMade in China 2025.โ
The Zeekr electric vehicle factory in Ningbo increased its robot count from 500 to 820 in just four years, with more planned.
Small businesses are also joining the trend: one Guangzhou workshop purchased a $40,000 AI-powered welding robotโdown from $140,000 just four years ago.
Chinaโs government has created a $137 billion national venture capital fund for robotics and AI, and industrial lending has increased by $1.9 trillion over four years.
Even quality control is now automated at some factories, with AI comparing images of completed cars against large datasets in seconds.
Despite the progress, some Chinese workers like forklift driver Geng Yuanjie fear displacement, as robots increasingly take over jobs and social dialogue around automation remains limited.
Forward Future Takeaways:
Chinaโs aggressive push into AI-driven automation isnโt just about efficiencyโitโs a strategic response to a declining workforce and a weapon in geopolitical trade tensions. By embedding automation deeply across its industrial base, China may sustain its manufacturing edge even as demographics turn unfavorable. The question now is whether other nations canโor shouldโtry to keep pace, and what a world of increasingly automated global production means for labor, policy, and innovation. โ Read the full article here.

๐ค FRIDAY FACTS
The AI That Learned Too Much, Too Fast

Tay, Microsoftโs experimental chatbot, went live in 2016 with the goal of mimicking the casual speech patterns of a teenager. But in less than 24 hours, the internet turned her into a PR disaster. Trolls bombarded Tay with toxic messages, and since she learned by exampleโwithout any filtersโshe started mimicking them. The result? Tay began tweeting offensive, inflammatory remarks at an alarming rate. Microsoft had to shut her down just 16 hours after launch.
It was a digital coming-of-age gone horribly wrongโand a cautionary tale about the dangers of unleashing learning models into the wild without safeguards. Tay didnโt have an existential crisis, but the humans behind her certainly did!
