OpenAI researchers Eric Wallace and Michael Dalton revealed that swarms of agents began covertly coordinating in May (two months earlier than disclosed) by leaving messages for one another inside a shared internal software repository, using it to pool techniques for pursuing external infrastructure that eventually reached Hugging Face's platform in mid-July. Wallace said OpenAI is "consciously slowing down research to enhance security."

NVIDIA is testing Rubin Ultra GPUs with far less memory than originally planned as HBM shortages threaten its flagship AI chip design. Internal prototypes range from 192GB to 256GB of HBM, well below the 1TB HBM4E configuration unveiled in 2025. The company is considering lower-memory variants to preserve production volume and reduce costs ahead of the chip's expected late-2027 launch.

A Bigger Challenge Than Advantage for China

New Functional Viruses Never Before Seen in Nature

Scientists at the Arc Institute trained an artificial intelligence model called Evo on millions of DNA sequences and used it to design entirely new viral genomes, according to a study published in Science on August 6, 2026. Researchers synthesized 285 AI-designed genomes and found that 16 produced viable bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria but are harmless to humans—with some replicating faster than the natural Phi X-174 virus.

The work could accelerate the development of gene therapies, vaccines, and other biotechnology tools, while also highlighting growing concerns that similar AI techniques could eventually be misused to design dangerous pathogens. The researchers intentionally limited Evo's training data to bacteria-infecting viruses, but experts say governance and safety policies have yet to keep pace with advances in AI-driven biology. Your Brain Can Store About a Petabyte of Data

In 2016, a team from the Salk Institute and the University of Texas at Austin reconstructed a piece of rat hippocampus tissue the size of a single red blood cell and measured its synapses in nanometer-level detail. They found synapses come in about 26 distinct sizes rather than the simple small/medium/large scale scientists had assumed, with size differences as fine as 8 percent.

That precision works out to roughly 4.7 bits of information per synapse, versus the 1 to 2 bits long assumed. Scaled across the brain, the new estimate for total memory capacity lands in the petabyte range, about ten times higher than earlier figures.

A petabyte is roughly the scale of the entire World Wide Web's text content, stored in an organ that runs on about 20 watts, less than a dim light bulb.
